Working with Denbar Tree
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Denbar Tree Service, Inc. holds California contractor’s license #1159474 and carries general liability insurance and workers’ compensation for our crew. We can provide a certificate of insurance on request.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Napa, Sonoma, and Lake Counties, including Angwin, Pope Valley, Deer Park, St. Helena, Calistoga, Rutherford, Oakville, Yountville, Napa, Sonoma, and Middletown. If you’re nearby but don’t see your town, call and ask.
Do you offer free estimates?
Yes. We look at your property, talk through your options, and give you a written estimate before any work begins.
How quickly can you get started?
It depends on the season and the type of job. Emergencies get priority, and we’ll give you a realistic timeline when we quote.
Are you a local company?
Yes. We’re a woman-owned company based on Howell Mountain in Angwin, and we work in the same communities where we live.
How do I know if a tree is dangerous?
Warning signs include dead or dying branches, a noticeable lean, cracks or splits in the trunk, fungus or decay at the base, lifted soil or exposed roots, and damage from fire, storms, drought, or disease. Trees close to your house, driveway, or power lines deserve extra attention. We’re happy to take a look and give you an honest opinion.
How much does tree removal cost in Napa and Sonoma County?
Cost depends on the tree’s size, species, and condition, how hard it is to reach, and how close it is to buildings or power lines. Because every tree is different, we give free written estimates after seeing the property.
Can you remove a tree that’s close to my house or power lines?
In most cases, yes. We use rigging and sectional removal to lower pieces safely instead of dropping the whole tree. If a tree is touching or very close to power lines, the utility may need to handle it first. Call us and we’ll tell you what to do.
Do you remove trees damaged by fire or storms?
Yes. Fire- and storm-damaged trees can fail long after the event, so we assess and remove compromised trees so you can clean up and rebuild safely.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree?
It depends on the tree, its size, and where you live. Some cities and counties regulate certain trees, such as protected oaks or trees near waterways. Check with your local planning department. We can help you understand what may apply.
When is the best time to prune trees?
It depends on the species. Many trees do best when pruned in late fall and winter while dormant. Dead, broken, or hazardous limbs can be removed any time of year. We’ll recommend timing based on your trees.
What’s the difference between tree pruning and tree trimming?
The words are often used interchangeably. Pruning usually means selective cutting to improve a tree’s health and structure, while trimming often refers to shaping or reducing growth. We prune with the long-term health of the tree in mind.
How much can you cut off a tree safely?
Removing too much at once can stress or damage a tree. We follow accepted pruning practices and will tell you if a tree needs a gradual approach rather than a heavy cut.
Do you grind stumps below grade?
Yes. We grind stumps below grade so you can replant, landscape, or build.
Do I have to remove the stump?
No. Stumps can stay, but they can attract pests, sprout regrowth, and become a tripping hazard. Many people grind them for appearance and safety
What is defensible space?
Defensible space is the area around your home and outbuildings where vegetation is cleared, thinned, and maintained to slow a fire and give firefighters a safer place to work.
How much defensible space do I need in Napa or Sonoma County?
California generally requires 100 feet of defensible space around structures where you control that much land, and some local fire agencies have additional rules. We’ll assess your property and explain what applies.
Will defensible space work help with homeowner’s insurance?
Many insurers now ask about or reward wildfire mitigation. Ask your agent what they require. We can provide an invoice describing the work done.
How often does defensible space need to be maintained?
Vegetation grows back, so most properties need work every year, ideally before fire season. We can set up annual maintenance.
Do you offer emergency tree service?
Yes. We’re available 24/7 for emergencies such as storm damage, fallen trees, and urgent hazards. If anyone is in immediate danger or a tree is on a person, vehicle, or structure with a safety threat, call 911 first.
What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Make sure everyone is safe, stay away from downed power lines (assume they’re live), and call 911 if there’s danger. Then call us at 707-276-6121 and we’ll help secure the situation. Contact your insurance company as soon as possible, and take photos of the damage.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance programs?
